PUBLIC LIABILITY :
What is it? This protects you against your legal liability in case of 3rd party property damage or injury due to your negligence. For example, if a guest slips on a spilt drink on a dance floor and breaks their ankle. The injured guest might hold you responsible on the grounds that you failed to prevent the accident from happening. Do I need it? This is not normally a legal requirement, however you might feel it is sensible in our increasingly litigious society. A few factors to consider are the size and type of the event, and the extent to which you are taking responsibility yourself for the running of the event. For example, if you hire a venue which is running your event on your behalf, then your liability exposure might be lower than if you run the event yourself.
Do you require Public Liability? * What Public Liability Limit do you require? What Public Liability Limit would you like? * Approximately how many guests / visitors will there be in total? * Will there be any hazardous or dangerous activities at your event?
This includes activities such as mechanical rides, inflatable play equipment, staging, tiered seating, fireworks, bonfires & pyrotechnics, archery or any activities on or near water.
“Please note that our Hiscox event policy excludes liability in respect of the ownership, possession, provision or use of any mechanically driven ride, inflatable play equipment, fireworks, bonfires, pyrotechnics, sparklers or any airborne lantern, unless such equipment has been set up by, operated by and taken down by a contractor who has provided you with written evidence of public liability insurance which covers such activities and indemnifies you as their client for providing you with such services under contract or agreement.
Therefore if you are hiring such equipment, for example a bouncy castle, then we recommend that the supplier provides an operator to supervise it and that you check they have adequate Public Liability insurance.”
Please give details of what hazardous or dangerous activities will be at your event? * EMPLOYERS LIABILITY :
What is it? This protects you against your legal liability in case of injury to your employees. An employee is anyone that is working for you whether or not you pay them, so a volunteer is an employee. Do I need it? If you have an Employee then, subject to some exemptions, by law you must carry Employers Liability Insurance.
Do you require Employers Liability? * How much will you spend on clerical wages? * How much will you spend on manual wages? * How many unpaid clerical volunteers? * How many unpaid manual volunteers? * CANCELLATION INSURANCE :
What is it? You can either cover your event costs or if relevant the revenue from the event. The eventualities which can be insured will depend on the type and details of the event, and can include; cancellation due to adverse weather, death or illness of a person on which the event depends and the unavailability of the venue due to fire or flood.
Do I need it? Much like the equipment insurance section, your decision as to whether to arrange insurance will depend on your estimation of the risk, your financial situation and the cost of the insurance.
Do you require Cancellation Insurance? What basis of cover do you require? What is the total cost of the event? Do you require Adverse Weather cover? PROPERTY - EVENT EQUIPMENT INCLUDING HIRED IN TEMPORARY STRUCTURES AND PLANT:
What is it? This is cover on your own or hired in event equipment such as marquees, and associated equipment such as dance floors, furniture, and mobile toilets, etc. As standard this includes cover for theft, flood, storm, fire, malicious damage and accidental damage. Cover may be subject to agreed security levels and reasonable care having been taken. Most claims result from theft, malicious damage and storm damage following high winds which haven’t been forecast. In order for us to arrange cover you will need to find out the value of the equipment.
Do I need it? We suggest that you check your supplier’s Term’s and Condition’s to see if they are holding you contractually responsible for any equipment you have hired in. If so they may also require that you arrange adequate insurance. If they don’t specify that you must take out insurance then you will need to choose whether or not you would like the cover, and your decision will be based on your estimation of the risk, your financial situation in terms of whether you can afford to take the risk yourself and of course the cost of the insurance (which we will try to make as low as possible for you).
